There are two Caledonian MacBrayne ferries which go to the Isle of Arran. The first is from Ardrossan in Ayrshire to Brodick in Arran. Ardrossan is about 60 km to the south west of Glasgow. If you are bringing your car to Arran then you do need to book ahead. This costs nothing, just a phone call to 01475 650000, then you pay on arrival at Ardrossan. If you are not bringing a car then there is no need to book. Ferries depart Ardrossan at 0700, 0945, 1230, 1515, 1800 and, on a Friday, 2030*. (*April to October) It takes 55 minutes to reach Arran and up to 15 minutes to disembark. If you are travelling by train then you want to catch the boat train from Glasgow Central station. This goes to the ferry terminal at Ardrossan and if the train is delayed the ferry waits for it to arrive. There are trains leaving Glasgow Central at 0833, 1115, 1415, 1650 and, on Friday, at 1915. If you are travelling by air to Glasgow Airport then on arrival take a short taxi ride to Paisley Gilmore Street railway station. Here you catch the boat train en route from Glasgow Central and the times of departure from Paisley are 0843, 1125, 1425, 1700 and, on a Friday, 1925. Air travel via Prestwick Airport is another option and here you take a train from the airport to Kilwinning railway station. Then change at Kilwinning and catch the train to Ardrossan ferry terminal leaving Kilwinning at 0910, 1153, 1455, 1726 or, on a Friday, 1953 . Return costs on the ferry are approximately £8 for a passenger and £50 for a car. |
